In the pursuit of greatness, the concept of balance often emerges as a guiding principle. However, the notion that one can evenly distribute time and energy across all facets of life is a myth. True achievement in any domain — be it personal or professional — requires a focused intensity that balance simply cannot accommodate. Instead, what we need is periodization, a strategy that allows us to be fully present and committed in each area of our lives at different times.
The idea of balance suggests that we can simultaneously give equal attention to all aspects of our lives — our careers, families, personal growth, and health. However, this notion is not only impractical but also counterproductive. Balance implies a static state, a perfect equilibrium that rarely exists in the dynamic flow of life. To achieve anything meaningful, we must be willing to tip the scales, to dive deeply into one area at the expense of others, even if temporarily.
Periodization, a concept borrowed from athletic training, involves dedicating specific periods to focus intensely on one area while allowing others to take a backseat. This approach acknowledges that life is not a zero-sum game; rather, it is about being fully present and engaged in whatever we are doing at the moment.
For example, there may be times when building a successful company demands long hours and intense focus. During these periods, other aspects of life, like social activities or hobbies, may receive less attention. Conversely, there are times when family takes precedence, such as being fully present during a child’s milestone or supporting a spouse through a challenging time.
As someone who aspires to be the best father and husband while also striving to create meaningful work and a successful company, I have found that balance is not the answer. Instead, I embrace periodization. When I am with my family, I am wholly there — engaged, attentive, and loving. When I am at work, I am focused, driven, and creative.
This approach does not mean neglecting responsibilities; rather, it is about prioritizing and being intentional with time. It is about understanding that life comes in seasons, each with its own demands and opportunities.
Ultimately, the closest we can get to “having it all” is by being fully present in each domain of our lives when we are there. This requires a conscious choice to shift focus and energy according to the needs of the moment. By doing so, we not only achieve more but also experience a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose.
The myth of balance should not deter us from pursuing our dreams. Instead, embracing periodization allows us to navigate the complexities of life with intention and presence, leading to a richer, more rewarding experience.
